ひな祭りは、3月3日に祝われる日本の伝統的な祭りで、女の子の健康や幸せ、繁栄を願う特別な日です。家庭では、帝の宮廷を模した美しいひな人形が飾られ、良い運をもたらすとされています。
先週、子どもたちはひな祭りについて学びました。語彙や歴史、歌、アートやクラフト、そしてお楽しみのクイズゲームなど、さまざまなことを学びました！
また、実際にひな人形の飾りつけを手伝い、このお祝いをさらに特別なものにしてくれました。
今日は欠席で参加できなかった子もいましたが、みんなでひな祭りをお祝いしました。ひなあられや菱餅、キャンディーをみんなで分け合い、この美しい伝統を大切にお祝いしました。

Did you know? Hina Matsuri, or Girls’ Day, is a traditional Japanese festival celebrated on March 3rd. It’s a special day to wish girls health, happiness, and prosperity. Families display beautiful Hina dolls, representing the imperial court, to bring good fortune.
Last week, the children began learning all about Hina Matsuri, from vocabulary and history to songs, arts and crafts, and their favorite—quiz games! They also helped set up and decorate the real Hina doll display, making the celebration even more special.
Today, although some children were absent, it didn’t stop us from enjoying the festival. We shared Hina Arare, Hishimochi, and candies, embracing the traditions of this beautiful celebration.

先週の金曜日、春の訪れを祝う日本の伝統行事「節分」をお祝いしました。この行事では、鬼を追い払って福を呼び込むために、みんなで豆をまきながら「鬼は外！福は内！」と唱えます。
週の初めに節分について学んだ後、子どもたちは「豆まき」に楽しんで参加しました。今回は、大豆の代わりに自分たちで作った新聞ボールを使いました。
部屋の中は笑い声と興奮でいっぱいになり、みんなで「鬼」に向かって新聞ボールを投げましたが、2人の小さな子どもたちはちょっと怖がって泣いてしまう場面もありました。
最後に、特別なおやつが配られ、楽しい1日を締めくくりました。文化的な伝統を楽しみながら、子どもたちにとって思い出に残る素晴らしい時間となりました。

Last Friday, we celebrated Setsubun, a traditional Japanese event that welcomes the arrival of spring. As part of this custom, people throw beans while chanting “Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!” to drive away evil spirits and invite good fortune.
After reviewing the lesson about Setsubun earlier in the week, the children eagerly took part in the ‘Bean Throwing’ event. Instead of soybeans, they used newspaper balls they had made themselves. Laughter and excitement filled the room as they tossed them at the “oni,” though two of our little ones found the experience a bit overwhelming and shed a few tears.
To end the celebration on a happy note, the children received a special snack, making the day even more enjoyable. It was a wonderful way for them to connect with cultural traditions in an engaging and memorable way.

七五三について
七五三は、「七・五・三」を意味する伝統的な日本の行事で、11月15日に、3歳、5歳、7歳の子どもの健やかな成長と幸せを祈るために行われます。
家族は通常子どもたちに美しい着物や袴を着せ、神社を訪れ、祈祷を受けます。また、千歳飴（長寿の象徴である細長い飴）をもらうこともこの行事の一環です。
この風習は、子どもの人生における大切な節目を祝う、貴重な文化的イベントです。

クラスでのお祝い
今日、近所の神社を訪れる予定でしたが、雨のため教室で七五三のお祝いを行うことにしました。
子どもたちは、自分たちで作った千歳袋に千歳飴をもらえることに大喜びでした。
袋作りは、手形を使った鶴の模様を描くところから始まりました。子どもたちは、色紙に手形を押し、それを乾かして切り抜きました。また、袋の側面を縫い合わせたり、装飾を加えたりする作業にも集中して取り組みました。
この作業にはほぼ１週間を要しましたが、完成した袋を見た子どもたちは、自分たちの努力の成果に驚き、誇りを感じていました。
お祝いの締めくくりには、七五三について学んだことを復習するための楽しいクイズを行いました。
子どもたちは意欲的に参加し、学んだことをしっかり覚えている様子が見られました。
計画の変更がありましたが、とても意味深く楽しい一日となり、七五三のお祝いはみんなにとって素晴らしく思い出に残るものとなりました！

Shichi-Go-San, meaning Seven-Five-Three, is a traditional Japanese celebration held on November 15th to pray for the healthy growth and happiness of children aged three, five, and seven. Families typically visit shrines, where children, dressed in beautiful kimonos or hakama, participate in blessings and receive chitose ame (long candy) as a symbol of longevity and good fortune. This custom is a cherished cultural event, marking important milestones in a child’s life.

Our Classroom Celebration
Today, we had planned to visit the shrine in our neighborhood, but due to the rain, we decided to hold the celebration in our classroom instead.
The children were thrilled to receive their chitose ame, which we placed in the chitose bags they made themselves.
They worked diligently, beginning with painting their hands to create crane prints, stamping them on colored paper, drying, and cutting them out. They also focused on stitching the sides of the bags and adding decorations to make them even more beautiful.
The kids were amazed and proud of the results of their hard work, which took nearly a week to complete.
To wrap up the celebration, we did a fun quiz to review and assess what the children had learned about Shichi-Go-San.
The kids were engaged and excitedly answered the questions, showing that they remembered the lesson well.
It was a meaningful and joyful day, and despite the change in plans, the Shichi-Go-San celebration turned out to be a wonderful and memorable experience for everyone!

ご近所の方のご厚意で、手打ちうどん体験をさせていただきました。

子ども達は、初めて見るうどん作りを真剣な表情で見入っていました。

生地の固さをみんなで触って確認したり、麺になるように延ばしたり・・とても貴重な体験をさせていただきました。

自分たちで作ったうどんの味は格別でした！

Our neighbors kindly allowed us to experience making handmade udon noodles.

Children watched very seriously as they experienced making udon noodles for the first time.

They all touched the dough to check its hardness and stretched it to form noodles... It was a very valuable experience.

The taste of the udon noodles they made was exceptional!

茶道の先生をお招きして、茶道の体験をしました。

子ども達は正座をして、先生の１つ１つの動きやシャカシャカと茶筅がふられる様子を興味津々に見ていました。

自分たちで作った「いもきんちゃく」とお抹茶をいただいたあと、日本の伝統的な遊び「福笑い」を教えてもらってみんなで楽しみました。

最後に感謝の気持ちを書いたお手紙を先生に渡しました。

We invited a tea ceremony (sado) teacher and held Japanese tea ceremony.

Children sat in seiza-style and watched while the teacher whisked the tea. Everyone seemed to be interested in the teacher's every move. 

After eating their handmade “imo kinchaku” and powdered green tea (matcha), children were taught a traditional Japanese game called “fukuwarai”. They all enjoyed playing it together.

At the end of the event, they gave letters of thanks and gave it to the teachers.
